The Burnout Paradox: Why more wellbeing isn’t solving the wellbeing crisis
This talk will challenge conventional thinking about workplace wellbeing by arguing that burnout is not primarily a resilience failure, but an organisational design problem. Rather than asking how individuals can become better at coping with work, it will invite the audience to consider what burnout reveals about the way work is designed, led and experienced. Drawing on research and practice, the session will explore burnout as organisational intelligence, asking what it reveals about the hidden assumptions, routines and ways of working that gradually make healthy people unwell. The talk will argue that the future of workplace wellbeing lies not in introducing more individual-level interventions, but in developing leaders who are curious about the everyday realities of work and willing to question existing practices. It will explore how leaders can move beyond managing the symptoms of poor wellbeing to addressing their underlying organisational causes by creating opportunities for collective reflection, learning and work redesign. Participants will leave with a fresh perspective on burnout, a deeper understanding of the relationship between leadership, work design and wellbeing, and practical questions they can use to create healthier, more sustainable workplaces. Ultimately, the talk will demonstrate that sustainable wellbeing is achieved not by helping people recover from poorly designed work, but by designing work in which people can genuinely thrive.
